Do These Thoughts Sound Familiar?

If you’ve ever found yourself thinking things like, “But I’m not hungry, so I must be fine,” or “My doctor said my labs are normal,” you’re not alone.

Many people also wonder, “How do you know this isn’t just my natural weight?” or believe, “I’m not like those people with eating disorders.”

These thoughts are incredibly common—and understandable in a culture that celebrates discipline, thinness, and self-denial. But just because they’re familiar doesn’t mean they’re helping you. In fact, they may be keeping you stuck in a pattern that’s quietly eroding your well-being.

The Real-Life Impact of Anorexia—Beyond the Plate

Anorexia isn’t just about what you eat or don’t eat—it affects how you feel, how you function, and how you connect.

You might notice your energy is low, or that you're always cold and tired. Maybe it’s harder to focus or stay present. Moods can shift too—irritability, numbness, or a lack of motivation are all common. Over time, sleep may suffer, periods may stop, and relationships can feel strained or distant. These are not personal failings; they’re signs that your body is asking for more care.

If you have noticed challenges in any of these areas, it’s time to reach out and get your mind and body the help they deserve:

  • Energy: Constant fatigue, dizziness, cold sensitivity

  • Sleep: Trouble falling or staying asleep

  • Focus: Re-reading the same sentence 5 times, zoning out

  • Mood: Irritability, low motivation, numbness

  • Relationships: Withdrawal, short temper, avoiding intimacy

  • Reproductive Health: Irregular or missing periods, fertility concerns

At Balanced Nutrition Therapy, we take a compassionate, whole-person approach to healing from anorexia.

That means we’re not just here to talk about food—we’re here to help you build a relationship with your body that feels supportive and grounded in trust. You'll work one-on-one with a dietitian who specializes in eating disorders, with the option for added support around meal planning, grocery shopping, cooking, and even eating together (virtually or in person).

Throughout your care, we collaborate closely with your therapist, physician, or treatment team so you’re never navigating this alone.

You don’t have to choose between recovery and control. You get to have a life that feels bigger than food rules—one rooted in nourishment, connection, and freedom.

FAQ: Real Questions from Real Clients

Do I have to be underweight to have anorexia?
No way! In fact, most of our clients wouldn’t be considered “underweight.” What really matters is how your relationship with food is impacting your life. If it feels rigid, stressful, or like you’re stuck in a loop — that’s enough to reach out.

What if I don’t look sick enough?
This is one of the most common thoughts we hear. You don’t have to “look” a certain way to be struggling. Eating disorders can happen at any size, gender, or background.

What’s the difference between an RD and a Recovery Coach?
Your RD will work with you on medical needs, meal planning, and restoring nutrition. Your Recovery Coach helps you carry it all out in real life, guiding you through grocery shopping, meals, hard moments, and everything in between.

Can you work with my therapist or doctor?
Absolutely. We believe recovery is strongest when your support team is connected. With your permission, we’ll collaborate with other providers in your life.
